2A. RELEASE OF HAND GRIPS I

1.- Soft and individual «outside» wrist grab. Variation: aggressive angles

We begin this next course with a block dedicated to hand grabs.

This situation can occur quite frequently, and the risk can vary depending on the attacker’s attitude.

We should try to detect aggression to initiate our defense technique, depending on each case.

In this first lesson, the scenario presents a «serial» wrist grab (meaning the hand on the same side is grabbed by the wrist), and a gentle, non-threatening grip is applied.

Let’s then look at the release process.

STEPS

  1. The attacker grabs us by the wrist without any signs of aggression.
  2. First, we must try to rotate our wrist so that the thin/narrow part of the arm is facing the opponent’s thumb.

By this we mean that to free ourselves from this grip, it’s best to use the narrowest part of the hand to find an exit in the area of the attacking hand, where there’s less blocking. In the closed area of the hand (the thumb), our wrist will have an easier time escaping.

  1. Now execute a movement similar to the horizontal elbow strike, throwing your elbow forward toward their arm, creating leverage that frees you from their hand.
  2. Take several steps back to create distance from your opponent and raise your hands in deterrent mode.
  3. Now try the other wrist for effective practice.ateral.

Now we’re going to pose the same situation as above, but in this case the opponent is in an aggressive stance.

This could be due to their movements, their threatening stance, or even if they’ve already hit someone and then grabbed our wrist.

In this type of scenario, it will be necessary to initiate a strike to create damage and then free our arm.
